Celebrated Colorado roots sextet Clay Street Unit is back with their new single Rollin’, dropping this Friday, and it’s just the beginning of what promises to be a landmark year for the band. Written solely by frontman Sam Walker, the track blends bluegrass-inspired plucky strings, mid-tempo grit, and heartfelt storytelling, capturing the ache of days stretching on while the one you love keeps rolling farther into the horizon.
“Whenever we're onstage, we're just trying to throw a party,” says Walker. “Life's hard enough already. We want to remind people to let loose, love each other, and enjoy themselves.” That balance between celebration and catharsis runs throughout Clay Street Unit’s sound, which fuses the acoustic instrumentation of bluegrass and folk with the amplified energy of Americana and country. The result is a fresh take on American roots music that honors tradition while feeling completely modern.
Formed in Denver in 2021, the sextet, Sam Walker (lead vocals/guitar), Scottie Bolin (mandolin), Jack Cline (banjo), Brad Larrison (pedal steel), Brendan Lamb (drums), and Jack Kotarba (bass), combined their diverse backgrounds from cities across the country to create a signature sound shaped by both southern storytelling and the rugged spirit of the West. After building a following in local venues and on the road, the band has cemented a reputation for electrifying live shows.
Rollin’ reflects the personal and emotional depth of Walker’s songwriting. “It's about being alone and having to face the past and the reality that it takes time to move on,” he explains. “Then one night I sat down and the whole song kind of came to me in one sitting… It’s a reflection of looking back from the other side of a relationship and realizing you can’t really control anything the other person does and that life goes on.”
Adding to the excitement, Clay Street Unit announced that their long-awaited debut album, Sin & Squalor, will be released on February 13th via Leo33. Produced by Chris Pandolfi of the Grammy-winning group The Infamous Stringdusters, the album channels the spirit of the West while drawing on the folk and country traditions of the South. From high-octane tracks like “Where Have You Gone” to introspective songs such as “Drive” and reflective collaborations like “Choctaw County” featuring Lindsay Lou, the record balances joy, hardship, and the raw emotion of life on the road.
With Sin & Squalor, Clay Street Unit delivers a fully realized sound, fresh yet timeless, rooted in American tradition but unmistakably their own. The band continues to showcase the chemistry of six friends who have shared countless hours on stage, blending string-band stomp, southern storytelling, and Newgrass energy into a style all their own.
