There’s something stirring in the Appalachian hills this fall, and it’s more than the sound of banjos, guitars, and voices rising in harmony. The sixth annual Healing Appalachia festival, set for September 19–20, is bringing its biggest and boldest event yet to a new location in Ashland, Kentucky, just a stone’s throw from the heart of where its story began.

Anchored by Kentucky-born headliners Tyler Childers and Chris Stapleton, this year’s lineup reads like a who’s who of Americana, bluegrass, and roots-rock royalty: Molly Tuttle, Remi Wolf, Lukas Nelson, Blackberry Smoke, American Aquarium, The Infamous Stringdusters, and many more are set to take the mountaintop stage near the Boyd County Fairgrounds.

But Healing Appalachia is far more than a festival. It's a grassroots movement wrapped in melody, created to raise awareness around addiction and recovery and to prove, year after year, that healing is not only possible, but powerful.

We’re stoked to welcome folks rolling in from all over the United States and across the globe, spreading the healing power of music and community throughout the festival and campgrounds,” said Dave Lavender, board president of Hope in the Hills. “We’re excited about not only presenting inspirational, top-shelf national acts and speakers on the main stage, but also offering unique experiences like our free Thursday night kickoff show, hike-in acoustic sets called Sauntersong, and creative healing spaces in our Camp Grindstone recovery camp.

The event, which coincides with National Recovery Month, invites over 20,000 fans from all corners of the country and beyond to experience recovery in action. Nearly 500 recovery volunteers run the show behind the scenes, from building stages to working hospitality and security. Between sets, they share their stories with the crowd, creating an environment charged with empathy, community, and courage.

Since its founding in 2018, Healing Appalachia has raised and distributed more than $1 million to over 100 boots-on-the-ground nonprofits offering everything from yoga in women’s prisons and trauma-informed youth camps to recovery housing and workforce reentry programs. Every ticket, every T-shirt, every donation helps fund life-saving work in communities often left behind in the national conversation.

Founded and hosted by Lawrence County native Tyler Childers and the team at WhizzbangBAM!, the festival remains the flagship event of Hope in the Hills, a West Virginia-based nonprofit led by an all-volunteer board dedicated to combating the opioid crisis.

And while the purpose is serious, the atmosphere is nothing short of joyful. Healing Appalachia offers the rare kind of gathering where music isn’t just entertainment, it’s medicine. From boot-stomping anthems to acoustic laments, from soaring fiddle solos to honest storytelling on stage, every note resonates with something deeper: hope.

As the festival’s reach continues to grow, so does its message. Whether you're a long-time advocate, someone on your own recovery journey, or a fan simply looking to connect with something real, Healing Appalachia promises an unforgettable weekend in the Kentucky hills.
